Andrographis

Andrographis paniculata — called King of Bitters in Ayurvedic medicine and chuan xin lian in Chinese medicine — is one of the most scientifically validated immune-stimulating herbs in the world, with a specific anti-COVID-19 compound profile that generated major research interest in 2020-2022. For Black Americans who suffered the highest COVID-19 mortality rates in the nation due to the intersection of weathering-driven comorbidities and healthcare access disparities, andrographis's anti-SARS-CoV-2 mechanism is a pharmacological justice claim.

Why it is ours

Andrographis gained mainstream awareness during COVID-19 when Southeast Asian countries incorporated it into national treatment protocols. Available at health food stores and online supplement retailers. Increasingly known in Black natural health communities as part of COVID recovery protocols.

What it does

Andrographolide is the primary diterpene lactone of Andrographis paniculata — one of the most pharmacologically active botanical compounds documented. Mechanism: (1) Andrographolide covalently binds to cysteine residue 62 of NF-kB p50 subunit, blocking DNA binding and downstream inflammatory gene transcription — turning off the master inflammatory switch; (2) A 2021 Science Advances study found andrographolide binds SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro) at IC50 of 15.8 uM, inhibiting viral replication — the mechanism that generated COVID clinical trials in Thailand and India; (3) A 2004 Cochrane Review of 7 RCTs found Andrographis preparations significantly reduced cold symptom severity and duration (WMD -0.93 days, 95% CI -1.29 to -0.58). Hepatoprotective activity: andrographolide induces Nrf2 pathway activation, upregulating glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase — protecting hepatocytes against oxidative injury relevant to the Black community where NAFLD and hepatotoxic medication side effects are underdiagnosed.

How it is cooked

Standardized extract: 300-600mg per day standardized to minimum 10% andrographolide content. Tincture: 2-3 ml twice daily. For acute illness: begin at first symptom, dose 3x daily for 5-7 days. Highly bitter — most people find capsules preferable to tea.
