A spoonful of blackstrap molasses in warm water — the ancestral iron and mineral tonic. The dark, bitter syrup left after refining is where all the iron, potassium, and magnesium concentrated.
When the cane was refined, the white sugar was sold and the blackstrap was left for the enslaved. The cruelest economics produced an accidental gift: the discarded syrup held the iron and minerals the refined product threw away. Black families turned that scrap into a tonic for the blood — a direct line from plantation deprivation to ancestral healing.
Blackstrap molasses is the mineral-dense residue of sugar refining — the part the enslaved kept. One tablespoon delivers roughly 20% of daily iron and significant potassium, magnesium, and calcium. For Black women carrying high rates of iron-deficiency anemia (worsened by fibroids and heavy bleeding), a daily molasses tonic is an ancestral iron source that absorbs alongside its own B6. The potassium and magnesium counter sodium-sensitive and stress-driven hypertension — the same minerals the Weathering Hypothesis says cortisol burns through. The iron is non-heme, so pair it with vitamin C (a squeeze of lemon) to boost absorption.
Stir 1-2 tablespoons of unsulphured blackstrap molasses into a cup of warm water or warm milk. Add lemon for iron absorption or ginger for the stomach. Drink once daily, ideally away from coffee or tea, which block iron uptake.
