Why it is ours

Church Punch is the beverage of every milestone in Black social life — the repast after the funeral, the baby shower in the fellowship hall, the wedding reception in the gymnasium, the pastor anniversary dinner. It requires no bar, no alcohol, no skill, and feeds two hundred people for twenty dollars. That economics is part of why it spread.

What it does

Church Punch has no meaningful healing profile — it is almost entirely sugar, artificial flavor, and carbonation. A standard serving from the punch bowl delivers 35-50g of added sugar. The honest entry: this drink's role is social, celebratory, and emotional. It signals that something good is happening. That function is real even if the nutritional profile is not.

How it is cooked

Classic formula: 1 gallon lime or rainbow sherbet softened to the edge of melting, 2 liters ginger ale (cold), 1 large can (46oz) Hawaiian Punch or fruit punch, sometimes 1 can frozen lemonade concentrate. Add sherbet to punch bowl first, pour ginger ale and punch over it, stir gently to leave some foam. Serve immediately — it separates as it warms. The foam and the color are the presentation.
