Cordyceps Militaris

The 1993 Chinese Olympic women's team broke every long-distance world record and their coach said it was Cordyceps. The compound that did it — cordycepin — acts on the adenosine system to delay fatigue and support oxygen utilization. For Black athletes, Black workers, Black families under chronic physiological stress — this mechanism belongs to you.

Why it is ours

Black men and women report higher rates of unexplained fatigue, exercise intolerance, and low energy that clinical medicine often dismisses or misattributes. Much of this fatigue is the physiological consequence of chronic stress and allostatic load. Cordyceps militaris addresses the mitochondrial and HPA axis mechanisms underlying this fatigue. Cultivated C. militaris powder is available on Amazon for $15-25 per month supply — accessible price point.

What it does

Cordycepin (3'-deoxyadenosine) is the signature bioactive of Cordyceps militaris — it activates the adenosine receptor system to modulate ATP production efficiency, documented to increase VO2 max (maximum oxygen utilization) in a 2016 randomized controlled trial in the Journal of Dietary Supplements, with 11% improvement in VO2 max in older adults. The Weathering Hypothesis documents that chronic racial stress depletes cortisol reserves and exhausts adrenal function in Black Americans — Cordyceps adaptogenic activity supports HPA axis recovery through modulation of cortisol feedback. CS-4 fraction (standardized beta-glucan) enhances ATP synthesis in mitochondria — relevant for the energy depletion that characterizes chronic stress-related fatigue. A 2020 study showed cordycepin inhibits inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-alpha) through NFkB pathway suppression — directly relevant for chronic low-grade inflammation documented in Black Americans.

How it is cooked

Available as dried mushroom (orange finger-shaped fruiting bodies), powder, or concentrated extract. Powder blends seamlessly into coffee, smoothies, or broth. Whole dried Cordyceps militaris can be simmered in bone broth for 20-30 minutes, then the mushroom eaten. Extract capsules (400-1000mg cordycepin-standardized) are the easiest therapeutic delivery. For athletic performance, 1-3g powder pre-workout in 8oz warm water.
