Fanta, Crush, Grape Nehi. The soda category beyond Kool-Aid. Documented in research as culturally embedded in Black American households. The sugar conversation applies fully.

Why it is ours

Grape and orange sodas are deeply embedded in Black American food culture — corner store, cookout, church picnic, movie theater. The cultural attachment is real and documented. Removing this food from the database would be dishonest about what Black Americans actually drink.

What it does

A 12oz grape soda delivers 39-44g of added sugar — 78-88% of the AHA's recommended daily maximum. High-fructose corn syrup drives hepatic lipogenesis, elevated triglycerides, and uric acid production independent of total calorie intake. The artificial colorings (Red 40, Blue 1) in grape soda are under ongoing regulatory scrutiny for behavioral effects in children.

How it is cooked

No preparation — consumed as packaged. The rehabilitation is substitution, not preparation modification.
