Why it is ours

Guava is a beloved diaspora and Caribbean fruit — in juice, in guava duff, in the Bahamian-Florida Black kitchen. Its juice keeps a tropical heritage flavor alive in Black American immigrant and Southern communities far from where the tree grows.

What it does

Guava is one of the most vitamin-C-dense fruits on earth — several times that of an orange — making guava juice a serious immune and antioxidant drink. Pink guava also carries lycopene and vitamin A. Critically, guava is high in soluble fiber (pectin) and has a relatively low glycemic impact for a sweet fruit, with studies suggesting it helps moderate blood sugar and cholesterol — so keeping the pulp in the juice (blending, not straining) preserves the fiber that makes it gentle on glucose. Potassium supports blood pressure. This is one of the more genuinely functional fruit juices when made whole-fruit and unsweetened.

How it is cooked

Blend ripe guava flesh (skin on for fiber) with water and a squeeze of lime; the seeds are edible but can be strained if texture matters. Keep it as a blend rather than a strained juice to retain pectin. No added sugar needed for ripe fruit. Serve cold.
