Hawthorn Berry & Flower

Hawthorn is the most clinically validated heart herb in Western herbal medicine — and for 200 years it grew in the hedgerows of Black Southern communities where the people dying of heart failure the most had the least access to cardiology. Hawthorn oligomeric proanthocyanidins increase cardiac output, reduce myocardial oxygen demand, and improve coronary blood flow. Your heart has always been the target. Hawthorn has always been in the yard.

Why it is ours

Heart failure disproportionately affects Black Americans — 25% higher mortality, younger age at diagnosis, and higher rates of hypertensive heart disease as the underlying cause. Hawthorn grows in Southern yards and is available as standardized extract at any health food store for $20-30/month.

What it does

Hawthorn OPCs work via four parallel cardiovascular mechanisms: (1) Positive inotropic effect — increases cardiac contractile force via phosphodiesterase inhibition (similar to digoxin, but milder and without toxicity). (2) Vasodilatory — OPCs stimulate eNOS and inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). (3) Anti-arrhythmic — reduces action potential duration in myocardial cells. (4) Antioxidant — dramatically reduces oxidative stress in cardiac tissue. SPICE trial (Tauchert, 2002, American Journal of Cardiology): 1440mg standardized hawthorn extract (WS 1442) improved maximal workload capacity in heart failure patients significantly vs placebo. A 2002 Cochrane Review of 8 RCTs confirmed hawthorn significantly improved exercise tolerance and reduced symptoms of dyspnea and fatigue in heart failure patients. Black Americans die from heart failure at 25% higher rates than white Americans. Hawthorn is the most evidence-supported herbal adjunct to conventional heart failure management.

How it is cooked

Standardized extract (WS 1442 — 18.75% OPCs, 6% flavonoids): 900-1800mg/day in divided doses. Tincture: 4-6ml three times daily. Tea: 2 tsp dried berries and/or flowers per cup, simmer 20 minutes. Berries edible as food — slightly sweet, mealy, apple-like. Allow 6-8 weeks for clinical cardiac effect.
