Lemongrass Tea

Lemongrass tea is what calm smells like. Citral — the primary volatile compound — activates GABA-A receptors through the same pathway as benzodiazepines, without the dependence. For Black Americans carrying the biochemical burden of chronic racial stress, this is not an aromatherapy footnote. This is a nervous system intervention.

Why it is ours

Fresh lemongrass available at Asian and Caribbean grocery stores, increasingly at Walmart and HEB. Lemongrass tea bags (Celestial Seasonings Tension Tamer, Traditional Medicinals) at mainstream grocery stores nationally. Cost-accessible and widely distributed — the intelligence barrier is the awareness of specific mechanisms, not access.

What it does

Citral (the compound responsible for lemongrass's aroma) demonstrates dose-dependent anxiolytic activity via GABA-A receptor positive allosteric modulation — confirmed in mouse model studies at Federal University of Ceará (2011). This is the same receptor family targeted by diazepam and alprazolam, but without receptor downregulation (no tolerance development) or dependence. A 2010 Journal of Advanced Pharmaceutical Technology & Research study (n=72) showed lemongrass tea reduced total cholesterol by 10-17% in hypercholesterolemic adults over 3 months. Geraniol demonstrates significant antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, E. coli, and Candida albicans at MIC concentrations achievable through tea consumption. Citral also shows calcium channel blocking activity — contributing to blood pressure reduction in animal models. Particularly relevant for Weathering Hypothesis mechanism: chronic cortisol elevation depletes GABA signaling — lemongrass tea provides direct GABA-A support for the biochemically stressed Black American nervous system.

How it is cooked

Fresh lemongrass stalks: bruise 2-3 stalks by bending and twisting, add to 4 cups boiling water, steep covered 10-15 minutes. Dried lemongrass: 2 tablespoons per 4 cups water, steep 10 minutes. Add ginger for synergistic anti-inflammatory effect. Lemongrass + rooibos blend combines GABA-modulation with cortisol inhibition for comprehensive nervous system support. Available as tea bags at mainstream grocery stores.
