Mangosteen

They call it the queen of fruits, and the purple rind that nobody eats is where all the good of it lives. The xanthones in mangosteen pericarp are among the most studied natural anti-inflammatory compounds ever identified. For a Black woman with multiple simultaneous inflammatory conditions — hypertension, fibroids, diabetes — this fruit's rind is a multi-target pharmacological agent.

Why it is ours

Fresh mangosteen is expensive and rare in the US ($5-8 per fruit when available). The therapeutic form — mangosteen juice with pericarp — is the practical access point and available at most health food stores. For Black Americans managing multiple inflammatory conditions simultaneously (the norm, not the exception), xanthones offer a multi-target anti-inflammatory approach without pharmaceutical side effects.

What it does

Alpha-mangostin — the primary xanthone in mangosteen pericarp — is one of the most extensively studied natural anti-inflammatory compounds, with 100+ peer-reviewed studies. Mechanisms include: NF-kB pathway inhibition (reducing TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-1beta simultaneously), COX-2 inhibition comparable to celecoxib in in-vitro assays, and STAT3 pathway inhibition in cancer cell lines. A 2009 Free Radical Biology and Medicine study confirmed alpha-mangostin inhibits proliferation of human breast cancer cells. Gamma-mangostin shows specific anti-adipogenic activity — inhibiting fat cell differentiation. Blood sugar: mangosteen extract shows PPAR-gamma activation, the same pathway targeted by thiazolidinedione diabetes medications. Anti-serotonin reuptake activity has been documented — suggesting antidepressant mechanism without pharmaceutical side effects.

How it is cooked

Fresh mangosteen: score the purple rind around the equator and twist apart. The white segments inside are the edible sweet fruit. The purple rind — where the xanthones concentrate — is bitter and usually discarded, but mangosteen pericarp extract (dried and powdered) is the therapeutic form. Available as mangosteen juice (look for whole-fruit juice including pericarp extract) or dried pericarp capsules at health stores.
