Marcona Almond

The Marcona is a rounder, sweeter, more delicate almond than the everyday California nut — a heritage variety prized for flavor. The almond is one of scripture's named foods, an ancient Mediterranean tree carrying vitamin E, magnesium, and heart-protective fat.

Why it is ours

Almonds bridge the biblical pantry and the modern heart-health plate — a nut named in scripture that also happens to be one of the best-studied foods for the cardiovascular and diabetes risks Black communities carry. The Marcona is the indulgent end of a genuinely medicinal food.

What it does

Almonds are the richest whole-food source of vitamin E among common nuts — a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects blood vessels and skin from oxidative aging. Their magnesium addresses the deficiency carried by most Black Americans, easing blood-pressure regulation and insulin function, while their monounsaturated fat and fiber lower LDL cholesterol and steady blood sugar when eaten with meals. The Marcona's higher oil content makes it even richer in these fats. A daily ounce is consistently linked to better cardiovascular and metabolic outcomes.

How it is cooked

Marcona almonds are usually sold blanched and lightly fried or roasted in oil with salt; for daily health eat them dry-roasted or raw and unsalted. Soaking raw almonds overnight softens them and reduces the phytic acid that binds minerals. Grind into almond butter or almond flour for baking.
