Moringa Fresh Leaf

Fresh moringa leaves — not the powder — are a categorically different food than the dried supplement sold in health food stores. Fresh leaves contain 3x more vitamin C, active isothiocyanates that survive only briefly after harvest and are largely destroyed by drying. This is the moringa your Haitian neighbor's grandmother grew in her yard. Picked fresh, eaten same day. The supplement is a shadow of the real thing.

Why it is ours

Moringa trees are widely grown in Florida, Texas, Georgia, and California by West Indian and West African diaspora communities. Trees reach harvest size in 8 months. One tree provides year-round greens in warm climates.

What it does

Fresh moringa isothiocyanates — particularly moringin and 4-(alpha-L-rhamnosyloxy)benzyl isothiocyanate (4-RBITC) — are destroyed by the drying process that produces moringa powder. These fresh-leaf-only compounds are the most potent anti-inflammatory agents in the plant, directly inhibiting NF-kB with IC50 values comparable to pharmaceutical NSAIDs in cell-line studies. A 2019 Journal of Medicinal Food clinical trial found fresh moringa leaf consumption (8g/day) reduced fasting blood glucose by 28% in type 2 diabetic patients over 40 days — results not replicated by equivalent moringa powder doses. Calcium at 440mg per 100g makes fresh moringa the single highest non-dairy calcium source of any commonly available plant — critical for Black women with fibroids using calcium for hormone balance (calcium deficiency accelerates estrogen dominance).

How it is cooked

Strip leaves from stems immediately before use — isothiocyanates begin degrading within hours of leaf damage. Add to smoothies, soups, rice dishes, or salads. Do not cook above 160F for more than 5 minutes. Best preparation: add raw to smoothies or as a raw garnish on cooked foods.
