Why it is ours

Pea protein is the go-to for soy-allergic and dairy-free Black plant-based eaters who need a protein boost — accessible, allergen-friendly, and effective for the gym crowd and elders alike.

What it does

Pea protein is well-suited to plant-based eating because it is rich in lysine and branched-chain amino acids — though slightly low in methionine, so combining it with grains or rice protein rounds it out (the completeness principle again). It is a strong tool against age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia) in plant-based elders, a real concern for Black seniors. Small trials suggest pea protein's arginine content may modestly support blood pressure, relevant to the Black hypertension burden. It is a processed isolate — better used to supplement a whole-food diet than to replace whole beans, peas, and lentils, which bring the fiber the powder lacks.

How it is cooked

Blend into smoothies with fruit and plant milk, or stir into oats. Pair with a grain-based protein or oats to complete the amino acid profile. Start with smaller amounts to assess digestion; some find it chalky, so blend well with banana or nut butter.
