Pumpkin Seed Oil

This one is for the brothers. Prostate cancer is the second leading cancer cause of death for Black men. BPH — the benign enlargement — affects Black men earlier and more severely than any other group. Pumpkin seed oil has more clinical trial data for prostate health than almost any other food compound. Dark green. Rich. One teaspoon a day.

Why it is ours

Black men die from prostate cancer at 2.3x the rate of white men and are diagnosed 2-5 years earlier on average. BPH affects Black men at earlier onset with more severe symptoms. Pumpkin seed oil is one of the most evidence-based non-pharmaceutical interventions for these conditions and is underutilized in Black men's health conversations. Available at specialty health food stores and online.

What it does

A 2014 randomized controlled trial in Nutrition Research and Practice found that pumpkin seed oil supplementation (320mg daily) significantly improved International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) by 30% after 12 weeks in men with BPH. A 2012 Phytomedicine study confirmed similar BPH symptom reduction. The mechanism involves delta-7-sterols inhibiting 5-alpha-reductase — the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT, the primary driver of prostate enlargement and androgenic hair loss. Zinc content, concentrated in the oil matrix, supports testosterone metabolism and prostate zinc levels (the prostate has the highest zinc concentration of any organ). A 2014 clinical trial confirmed pumpkin seed oil's effect on overactive bladder, with significant reduction in nighttime urinary frequency — a quality-of-life issue for Black men with BPH.

How it is cooked

Not for cooking — pumpkin seed oil is too delicate for heat and loses its sterols above 300°F. Use as a cold finishing oil or take directly by teaspoon. Dark green to deep amber in color. Drizzle over warm grain dishes, salads, or soups after removing from heat. Also available in capsule form (320-1000mg) for those who prefer supplemental dosing.
