Why it is ours

Available as powder online and at health food stores. Four Sigmatic and Host Defense are commonly available brands. Increasingly in mainstream health stores.

What it does

Reishi beta-glucans are among the most potent natural immunomodulators documented — they calibrate immune response (up-regulate when underactive, down-regulate when overactive — relevant for autoimmune conditions including lupus, which disproportionately affects Black women). Ganoderic acids reduce blood pressure and LDL through ACE-inhibitory mechanisms. Multiple studies show improved sleep quality and reduced anxiety. Used as a complement to conventional cancer treatment in integrative medicine — improves quality of life and reduces fatigue.

How it is cooked

Reishi is too bitter to eat as a food — always used as an extract or tea. Reishi extract powder in coffee or tea (1 tsp). Reishi tea: simmer dried slices in water for 30-60 minutes. The bitterness means it is almost always consumed as a supplement — look for dual-extraction products (water + alcohol extract) for full ganoderic acid content.
