Sea moss gel blended into a creamy mineral-rich smoothie or punch with fruit, spice, and lime. A whole-food multimineral drink carrying iodine, magnesium, and gut-soothing fiber — the wellness drink Black culture made its own.
Sea moss has become a defining drink of contemporary Black American wellness culture — sold at the barbershop, the cultural festival, the Black-owned juice bar. It connects modern self-care to a genuine coastal West African and Caribbean tradition of sea vegetables as medicine.
Sea moss (Irish moss / Chondrus crispus and Gracilaria) is a whole-food source of a broad mineral spectrum, including iodine for thyroid function — relevant given thyroid disparities in Black women. Its soluble fiber soothes the gut lining and acts as a prebiotic, while magnesium, potassium, and iron support blood pressure, energy, and the blood. Blended into a smoothie with low-sugar fruit (berries, banana in moderation), ginger, and lime, it becomes a dense multimineral drink. The honest caveat: iodine content is highly variable and can run very high, so moderate the dose, and many commercial 'sea moss punches' are sugar-loaded — the home smoothie is the controlled version.
Soak and rinse raw sea moss, blend with water into a gel, and refrigerate. Blend 1-2 tablespoons of gel into a smoothie with fruit, plant milk, ginger, cinnamon, and lime. Sea moss gel is nearly flavorless and acts as a thickener, so it disappears into the blend.
