Spirulina

One tablespoon of spirulina powder provides 4g of complete protein, 11% of daily iron, significant B vitamins, beta-carotene, and phycocyanin — a pigment unique to spirulina with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties found nowhere else on earth.

Why it is ours

Available at Whole Foods, vitamin stores, and online. Affordable per serving. The Lake Chad origin makes it directly ancestral to West African heritage.

What it does

Phycocyanin inhibits histamine release from mast cells — a documented anti-inflammatory mechanism distinct from any other food compound. Reduces LDL and triglycerides in multiple meta-analyses. The iron is non-heme but the vitamin C in the same meal dramatically increases absorption. The Kanembu people of Lake Chad used dihé to prevent and correct malnutrition for centuries — validating spirulina as a foundational ancestral food, not a modern supplement trend.

How it is cooked

Add 1 teaspoon to smoothies, water, or yogurt. The flavor is strong and oceanic — blend with banana, mango, or berries to mask it. Start with 1/4 tsp and increase gradually. Spirulina tablets are an alternative for those who cannot tolerate the taste.
