Tribulus Terrestris

Tribulus is the most used male vitality herb in traditional medicine across four continents — and the one most often oversimplified as just a testosterone booster. What it actually does is more specific and more relevant for Black men: it improves LH pulsatility (the signal that tells the testes to produce testosterone), supports erectile function via nitric oxide enhancement, and reduces the stress-driven testosterone depletion that the weathering process accelerates in Black men.

Why it is ours

Low testosterone in Black men from chronic stress is systematically underdiagnosed — and testosterone replacement therapy carries cardiovascular risk. Tribulus provides a physiological signaling approach (LH stimulation) vs exogenous replacement, with a much lower risk profile. Available at most supplement retailers.

What it does

Protodioscin is the primary bioactive — it converts to DHEA in the body via a multi-step enzymatic pathway, providing a substrate for testosterone and estrogen synthesis. Mechanism for male health: tribulus increases LH pulse amplitude in some studies, which drives testicular testosterone production without directly suppressing the HPG axis as exogenous testosterone does. Neychev & Mitev (2005, Journal of Ethnopharmacology) — 21 male subjects: tribulus extract 750mg/day for 4 weeks showed no significant change in testosterone but significant improvement in sexual function scores vs placebo. Meta-analysis: Kamenov et al. (2017) — significant improvement in erectile function and libido in hypogonadal men. For Black men specifically: weathering-driven cortisol elevation suppresses testosterone via hypothalamic GnRH reduction — tribulus targets LH to partially offset this. Chronic stress-driven low testosterone in Black American men is an underdiscussed epidemic, connected to the higher rates of metabolic syndrome, depression, and cardiovascular disease in this population.

How it is cooked

Supplement: 750-1500mg standardized extract (40-60% saponins, standardized to protodioscin content) daily with meals. Split dosing (morning + evening) is preferred. Allow 4-8 weeks for effect. Quality matters: protodioscin content varies enormously across products; Bulgarian-sourced tribulus typically has highest protodioscin concentration.
