Turkey Tail Mushroom

The immune mushroom. Contains PSK (polysaccharide-K) and PSP — two of the most clinically studied natural immune modulators in oncology. Used as standard adjunct cancer therapy in Japan since the 1980s.

Why it is ours

Black women have the highest breast cancer mortality rate in the US at every stage. Turkey tail as a chemotherapy companion (reduces fatigue, improves immune markers, reduces GI side effects) is clinically supported and widely used in integrative oncology — rarely offered in standard oncology consultations serving Black patients.

What it does

PSK approved as a prescription cancer drug in Japan (Krestin). A 2012 Bastyr University study showed turkey tail significantly improved immune cell populations in breast cancer patients undergoing conventional treatment. Beta-glucans activate natural killer (NK) cells, macrophages, and T-cells — the exact immune cells suppressed by chronic stress (weathering). PSP has shown antiviral activity against HPV in preliminary studies. Black women have higher HPV-related cervical cancer mortality — relevant.

How it is cooked

Dried powder in hot water as tea (simmer 20 minutes for full extraction). Capsule extract (500mg-3g daily). NOT an eating mushroom — too tough. Must be extracted via hot water or alcohol tincture to release beta-glucans. Double extraction (hot water + alcohol) captures both water-soluble and fat-soluble compounds.
