Why it is ours

The $3 fish sandwich from the corner fish shop is one of the most universal shared experiences in Black American life. From South Philly to the South Side of Chicago to Compton to Overtown in Miami, Black neighborhoods built carryout fish shops that served everyone and asked no questions. It is accessible, affordable, filling, and culturally specific. Fast food never quite replaced it because it never tried to.

What it does

A fish sandwich from a Black carryout shop delivers 25-30g protein at low cost. The fish itself — typically whiting or catfish — is lean and nutritionally sound. The main concerns are refined white bread, frying oil quality, and sodium from seasoning. The protein foundation is real and should not be dismissed.

How it is cooked

At home: pan-fry whiting or catfish fillet in avocado oil, serve on a toasted whole-grain roll with hot sauce, coleslaw, and pickles. The fish is the hero — upgrade the bread and the oil and you have a legitimate meal. A squeeze of lemon and a few slices of tomato make it complete.
