Why it is ours

Tuna salad is one of those dishes that crosses every class line in Black households — it showed up at grandmother's house, in school lunch boxes, at church potlucks, and in apartments where the budget ran out before payday. It is not glamorous but it is honest, and it kept protein on the table when nothing else was easy.

What it does

Canned light tuna delivers 22g protein per can at under 100 calories with 0.17g omega-3s per serving. Affordable, shelf-stable, SNAP-eligible — it is the most accessible lean protein in the American food supply. Choose light tuna over albacore for lower mercury exposure with frequent consumption.

How it is cooked

Drain tuna thoroughly. Mix with mayonnaise, finely diced celery, diced onion, sweet relish, black pepper, and a squeeze of lemon. Taste before adding salt — packed tuna already has sodium. Serve on toasted bread, crackers, or over greens. Add diced dill pickles or a small amount of Dijon mustard for complexity.
