A thick, creamy drink made from soaked and blended Irish/sea moss (Gracilaria species), whole milk or plant milk, Angostura bitters, vanilla, nutmeg, and condensed milk — Jamaica's traditional gut-health and thyroid-support tonic.
Sea moss gel has become one of the most significant Black wellness movements in recent history — popularized by Dr. Sebi, Nipsey Hussle, and countless Black health content creators. The movement is a reclamation of Caribbean ancestral food knowledge that mainstream care had passed over. Every Black American home with a jar of sea moss gel in the refrigerator is continuing a Jamaican tradition that stretches back centuries.
Sea moss provides iodine — the mineral most critical for thyroid function and most commonly deficient in non-seafood-eating populations. Black women have significantly higher rates of hypothyroidism than white women (a 2020 JAMA study found 2x higher prevalence) — and iodine deficiency is a direct contributor. Sea moss polysaccharides (carrageenans in Chondrus crispus) serve as prebiotics, feeding Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium while providing a gel matrix that coats and soothes the gut lining. The prebiotic effect of sea moss gel is distinct from and complementary to soluble fiber prebiotics.
Rinse sea moss thoroughly. Soak in clean filtered water 24-48 hours (changes color from dark to lighter, expands significantly). Rinse again. Blend soaked sea moss with fresh water until completely smooth gel forms. Store in refrigerator up to 3 weeks. To make drink: blend 2 tablespoons sea moss gel, milk or plant milk, condensed milk, Angostura bitters, vanilla, nutmeg, flaxseed, cinnamon until smooth and frothy.
