Mondia whitei

Mondia whitei, 'white ginger' or mulondo, is Africa's classic aphrodisiac and appetite root — a sweet, vanilla-ginger-scented bark used to restore libido, stimulate appetite, and tonify the body, especially for men.

Why it is ours

Black men face high rates of erectile and metabolic dysfunction tied to hypertension, diabetes, and stress, and often distrust or cannot access clinical sexual-health care. A culturally rooted, nutrient-rich African libido and vitality tonic offers an ancestral on-ramp to that conversation.

What it does

Mondia whitei root is a documented aphrodisiac in African ethnomedicine, and animal studies show it increases testosterone levels, sperm count, and sexual behavior; its aromatic compound 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde contributes the signature scent and bioactivity. The root is also nutrient-dense (notably iron and magnesium), grounding its traditional use as an appetite stimulant and recovery tonic for the underweight, anemic, and convalescent. It additionally shows antidepressant-like and serotonin/dopamine-modulating activity in studies.

How it is cooked

Decoction: simmer dried root pieces 15-20 minutes for a sweet, spicy tonic tea, often sweetened. Also chewed directly, soaked in water overnight, or taken as a powdered root in porridge or drinks.
