Honeybush

Honeybush is rooibos's sweeter cousin — a caffeine-free, naturally sweet Cape fynbos tea the Khoisan drank as a daily tonic for coughs, menopause, and calm, rich in antioxidants and phytoestrogens.

Why it is ours

A naturally sweet, caffeine-free tea is a meaningful swap for sweetened sodas and sweet tea in a community facing high diabetes rates — sweetness without sugar, plus phytoestrogen support for Black women navigating menopause earlier and harder due to weathering.

What it does

Honeybush is naturally caffeine-free and low in tannins, making it gentle for daily and evening use. Its standout compound is mangiferin, a xanthone with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and blood-sugar-modulating activity, plus pinitol (insulin-sensitizing). It also contains phytoestrogenic isoflavones, the basis of its traditional use for menopausal symptoms and bone support. The polyphenol profile supports antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects relevant to metabolic and cardiovascular health.

How it is cooked

Steep 1-2 teaspoons dried honeybush in just-boiled water 5-10 minutes (longer steeping deepens the natural sweetness without bitterness). Can be brewed strong and drunk hot or iced; no caffeine, so suitable at night.
