Sutherlandia

Sutherlandia, the 'cancer bush' or kankerbossie, is Southern Africa's most revered adaptogen — used for wasting illness, grief, stress, and immune support, and studied as a supportive herb in HIV/AIDS and cancer fatigue.

Why it is ours

HIV and certain cancers carry significant disparities in Black American communities, and Sutherlandia represents African community medicine developed precisely for immune wasting and the grief that accompanies chronic illness — a diaspora parallel to how Black Southern healers tended both body and spirit.

What it does

Sutherlandia contains an unusual quartet of actives: L-canavanine (an arginine analog studied for antiviral and antineoplastic activity), pinitol (which improves insulin signaling and has anti-wasting effects), GABA (calming, anti-anxiety), and asparagine. This profile underlies its traditional reputation as an adaptogen for wasting diseases — it was widely used in Southern Africa as supportive care during the HIV/AIDS epidemic to counter cachexia, low mood, and fatigue. It is positioned in herbalism as a tonic for body and spirit rather than a cure.

How it is cooked

Tea: steep 1 teaspoon dried leaf in hot water 5-10 minutes, up to twice daily traditionally. Also available as tablets and tinctures standardized in South Africa.
