APEX Legacy · a way of life

Nile Tilapia

Mild-flavored white freshwater fish with lean protein, selenium, niacin, and B12. Not high in omega-3 (the trade-off for its low cost), but an exceptional lean protein source at the lowest budget tier. The food that fed African civilizations for 5,000 years is now available at Walmart for $4/lb.

Why it is ours

Tilapia is the people's fish — present at every budget level in the Black American community. APEX contextualizes it within its 5,000-year African history and provides preparation guidance that maximizes its nutritional value.

What it does

Lean protein from tilapia is optimal for T2D management — high protein improves satiety and glycemic control without the saturated fat of red meat. Selenium content supports thyroid function and immune competence. The low omega-3 is often overstated as a concern — at the budget tier where tilapia is consumed, it beats no fish at all by a very wide nutritional margin.

How it is cooked

One of the most versatile, budget-friendly fish available. Bake with lemon, garlic, and herbs. Pan-fry in avocado oil with suya spice. Add to soups and stews. Grill whole. West African preparation: whole tilapia in pepper stew (tomato, onions, scotch bonnet) — the classic preparation.
