Why it is ours

Oat straw is a Western-herbalism nervine more than a Black folk tradition, but it answers the exact condition the community carries: bone-tired, nerve-frayed exhaustion from carrying too much for too long. As a mineral-restoring daily tea, it nourishes rather than stimulates.

What it does

Oat straw is a 'nervine trophorestorative' in herbal terms — a tea that slowly rebuilds a depleted nervous system rather than sedating it. It is unusually mineral-dense, delivering bioavailable calcium, magnesium, and silica that support bone strength and the calm magnesium-dependent nervous system. The magnesium connection matters acutely here: the Weathering Hypothesis ties chronic racial stress to cortisol-driven magnesium depletion and sodium-sensitive hypertension. A daily mineral-rich, magnesium-bearing tea that gently restores the nerves speaks directly to that biology. Avenanthramides add anti-inflammatory antioxidant action.

How it is cooked

This herb rewards a long steep. Use a heaping tablespoon of dried oat straw per cup and steep covered for at least 15-20 minutes, or do an overnight cold infusion in a jar to draw out the most minerals. Strain. Mild and pleasant.
