Rhodiola

The arctic root adaptogen — the most clinically validated herb for reducing cortisol reactivity to stressors. The weathering-hypothesis supplement.

Why it is ours

Cortisol-driven hypertension is the dominant pattern in stress-weathered Black Americans. Rhodiola addresses the mechanism that DASH diet and sodium reduction alone do not touch.

What it does

Rosavins and salidroside act directly on the HPA axis — reducing cortisol reactivity to stress stimuli without creating dependency or blunting the normal stress response. A 2009 double-blind RCT showed rhodiola reduced burnout symptoms and cortisol levels over 12 weeks. The cortisol-mediated hypertension phenotype — blood pressure highest in the morning, rises with stress events, poor response to sodium reduction alone — is precisely the pattern rhodiola addresses. Also demonstrated antidepressant effects in 3 randomized trials through dopamine and serotonin transporter inhibition.

How it is cooked

Take standardized extract capsules (3% rosavins, 1% salidroside on label) on an empty stomach in the morning. Start with 200-400mg. Stimulating effects can interfere with sleep if taken late.
