Rooibos Tea

Rooibos contains aspalathin and nothofagin — antioxidant compounds unique to this plant, found nowhere else on earth. Caffeine-free. Alkaline-forming. Documented effects on blood glucose, cortisol, and cardiovascular markers. The only entirely African tea in the database.

Why it is ours

Available at Whole Foods, Tea Forte, and increasingly at mainstream stores. Celestial Seasonings and Bigelow carry rooibos blends. Price is comparable to standard herbal tea.

What it does

Aspalathin is one of the only plant compounds shown to directly inhibit cortisol synthesis in adrenal cells — the mechanism that makes rooibos a literal cortisol-reducing beverage. Directly relevant to cortisol-mediated hypertension in Black Americans from racial stress. Research shows reduced fasting glucose and improved insulin sensitivity after 6 weeks of regular consumption. Calcium content supports bone density. Completely caffeine-free — can be consumed at any time including before bed.

How it is cooked

Steep 1-2 teaspoons of loose leaf rooibos (or 1 bag) in boiling water for 5-7 minutes — longer than most teas, the tannins are gentler. Drink plain, with honey, or with a splash of oat milk. Can be served cold. Red in color (rooibos means 'red bush'). Drink before bed as a cortisol-reducing, sleep-supporting ritual.
