Flaxseed Oil

The most omega-3-dense plant oil there is — cold-pressed flax, a vegetarian answer to fish oil for those who will not or cannot eat seafood.

Why it is ours

A budget-and-access tool: for households where fresh fatty fish is out of reach, a refrigerated bottle of flax oil delivers plant omega-3 cheaply and reliably.

What it does

Flaxseed oil is the densest plant source of ALA omega-3 — over half its fat is this anti-inflammatory fatty acid. ALA modestly lowers inflammatory markers and blood pressure and supports heart and brain health; the body converts a fraction to EPA and DHA. For Black Americans facing high rates of hypertension and cardiovascular disease, an omega-3 source that requires no fish is a practical lever, especially where fish access or preference is a barrier. Flax lignans add a phytoestrogen and antioxidant benefit relevant to menopausal symptoms and hormone-sensitive health. The catch is fragility: this oil oxidizes fast and must be kept cold and fresh.

How it is cooked

Strictly a cold oil — blend into smoothies, drizzle over oatmeal or yogurt, whisk into dressings. Never heat. Keep refrigerated, ideally in dark glass, and use within weeks of opening.
