Peaches

Georgia's signature fruit. Summer sweetness that powers peach cobbler — one of the most culturally significant Black American desserts.

Why it is ours

Black farmworkers in the Georgia and South Carolina peach belt built much of that industry. South Carolina was actually the largest peach-producing state through most of the 20th century.

What it does

Peaches contain chlorogenic acid, a polyphenol with documented blood sugar-moderating effects. Vitamin C supports iron absorption from plant sources — relevant for Black women with higher rates of iron deficiency anemia.

How it is cooked

Eat fresh with skin on. Frozen peaches retain most nutritional value. Canned in 100% juice is acceptable; canned in syrup significantly increases sugar load.
