APEX Legacy · a way of life

Black Cohosh

The most studied herbal medicine for menopausal symptoms in the world — over 40 clinical trials conducted globally. Contains triterpene glycosides (actein, cimicifugoside) with documented activity on menopausal symptoms, particularly hot flashes, night sweats, and mood disruption. Also has modest anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effects.

Why it is ours

Black American women in the Carolinas lived within walking distance of this plant for 200 years. Their knowledge of forest plants almost certainly included black cohosh — the same forest knowledge the Cherokee carried. APEX honors the historical intersection of enslaved Black women's healing knowledge and Indigenous plant medicine.

What it does

The most-studied herbal medicine for menopausal hot flashes. A 2012 Cochrane review of 16 RCTs found significant reduction in vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats) with black cohosh. Specifically relevant to Black American women who have higher incidence of fibroids, earlier surgical menopause (hysterectomy), and limited access to hormone therapy — black cohosh is the evidence-based non-hormonal option.

How it is cooked

Available as standardized extract (20mg isopropanolic extract is the clinical dose studied) at health food stores, pharmacies, and online. Look for standardized extract, not just dried herb. Tea preparation is less reliable for dose standardization. Remifem and Remifemin are the European-studied brand names.
