Seasoning Salt

In virtually every Black kitchen in America. The single biggest hidden sodium source in everyday Black American cooking — 400-600mg per teaspoon before anything else is added.

Why it is ours

Tony Chachere's is not just a seasoning in Creole and Deep South Black households — it is a cultural identity marker. Lawry's is the Northern and Midwestern equivalent. Any health conversation that treats this as a simple 'bad habit' to eliminate has misread the room.

What it does

Studies show roughly 75% of hypertensive Black Americans are salt-sensitive. Reducing daily sodium from the typical 3,500-4,000mg to 1,500-2,000mg can lower systolic blood pressure by 5-10 mmHg independently of medication. One teaspoon of Lawry's contains 400mg sodium; Tony Chachere's runs 580mg per teaspoon.

How it is cooked

The rehabilitation is not elimination — it is replacement. Make your own blend: smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, cayenne, dried thyme, cumin, a small amount of salt. Tony Chachere's makes a salt-free 'More Spice' seasoning that is an excellent direct swap.
